chipko movement
THE STORY OF AMRITA DEVI
Chipko movement is a progressive step in the direction of protecting forest. the main aim of this movement is to prevent deforestation. this movement started from Rajasthan jodhpur district in khejarli village, where, along amrita devi, 363 people of bishnoi community had sacrificed their lives for protecting cutting of trees.
in 1730 AD , at one time, wood was required for construction of kings palace. so, his soldiers went to khejarli village , holding axes in their hands started cutting the trees. listening the noise of cutting, amrita devi went there along with her three daughters embraced the tree and the kings soldiers cut them along with the tree.
this news spread like wild fire in the surrounding area. people came over there and embraced the trees and sacrificed their lives also. so, to protect the trees, 363 people sacrificed their lives. Today also, Bishnoi community is committed to protect the trees and wildlife . after khejarli, in the year 1973, women of uttarakhand ran the chipko movement. this movement continued for 8 years. in 1981, the government prohibited deforestation in areas above 1000 m in height.
After Khejarli sacrifice , this movement has been caried out by Sundarlal Bahuguna. Similarly
the same kind of movement has been run in karnataka in name of "Appiko" it is a kannada language which meaning is "to embrace".
khejarli sacrifice is regarded as ideal for protection of trees till today. people remember this and take inspiration from it.
kejri trees are know as "kalpavriksha" of thar desert area of Rajasthan which is famous for sagwan, the pride of rajasthan. its scientific name is prosopis cineraria.
In 1983, khejri tree was declared as the state tree of Rajasthan.
